mother-son dance

The traditional mother-son dance during the wedding reception gives the groom and his mom a special moment to share in the spotlight. Whether you choose a playful, lighthearted song to dance to, or something more sweet and soulful (practically guaranteed to bring tears to everyone’s eyes!), the song you choose should be an expression of your relationship with your mom. Think about songs you listened to together when you were little, or tunes by her favorite singer or band. And the song definitely does not have to make sense to everyone in the room, as long as it’s special to you and your mom. (But it’s always a good idea to double-check lyrics to make sure the song is wedding-appropriate.)

We also love the idea of a custom mashup that combines a new favorite with a classic tune to bridge the generations. Also, these days, many couples are skipping the separate father-daughter and mother-son dances in favor of a combined parents’ dance with both pairs sharing the same song together on the dance floor. You could also opt to dance with other loved ones, like siblings or young family members.

To help you select your own mother-son dance song, we’ve put together a list of popular songs by genre (we also threw in a few fun favorites to mix it up!).
